After a thorough public procurement process, Region Blekinge and the municipalities in Blekinge County have selected Dermicus to implement a regionwide telewound platform. The multiyear initiative, which just has started, is a first-of-its-kind in Sweden by combining the region and the municipalities in one tender with an innovative clinical model supported by digital health technology. The aim of the project is to improve the assessment and treatment of patients with hard-to-heal wounds.

“We have developed Dermicus as a digital workflow and collaboration platform for hard to-heal ulcers through research projects with healthcare providers connected with RiksSår, the Swedish National Quality Registry for Ulcer Treatment. There is significant potential for enhancing the care pathway, leading to economic savings and quality improvements. The cooperation between the region and the municipalities in Blekinge is unique and innovative and will hopefully inspire others to follow in Sweden, and across Europe,“ says Dermicus CEO, Peter Kinhan.

Dedicated telemedicine wound platform

The new Swedish care guidelines for hard-to-heal wounds align well with the digital health platform of Dermicus. To enable efficient patient processes, a secure, yet flexible and configurable system is needed. Blekinge, which is at the forefront of disseminating knowledge about hard-to-heal wounds, has long been recognized as a leader in wound management, making it well positioned for success in this program.

“Our investment aims to enhance the care of individuals with hard-to-heal ulcers, thereby increasing their psychological and physical well-being, and improving their quality of life. By increasing the knowledge of wound management in regional and municipal primary care, we expect to improve the treatment of patients with wounds and to reduce wound healing times. We also want to develop a joint working method between municipal and regional operations,” says Nina Åkesson, district nurse, Region Blekinge.

Implementing a telewound system on a scale this large for both a region and municipalities requires a platform that can meet a broad range of clinical and IT requirements. Moreover, Dermicus will deploy the telewound platform on a Swedish cloud to meet their requirements.

“We are extremely proud to partner with Blekinge. We have made significant investments in the Dermicus technology to ensure it stands up to the scrutiny of a rigorous public procurement, just like it did in Stockholm, Skane and now Blekinge. We are also excited to work shoulder-to-shoulder with the Blekinge team in training the users and ensuring this new solution makes a difference to patients’ lives,” says Daniel Eliasson, Dermicus COO.
